Like most people that we met in Pune (India) this month, these children - who were keen to be photographed - look happy and resilient. Other pictures are at here.
But their living conditions, even in the dry season, are very hard. Educationto empower them, is vital so that they and others can evade not only the most miserable living conditions, but also the oppression and vulnerability that often accompanies the poor.
Colin has worked to raise awareness of poverty for many years, including through his work for the NGOs BODHI, and BODHI Australia which he co-founded in 1989, and his doctoral thesis, "Inequality and Sustainability" (Australian National University, 2002). Inequality and poverty are the bedrock for what he called "environmental brinkmanship". Too many affluent people think their security is enhanced by more inequality, rather than less.
